Want to know how to keep warm in winter while still looking polished and chic? Here are 8 tips stay warm in winter.
If you live in a cold country you know the struggle of being torn between wanting to put on an outfit that turns heads and not freezing to death.
I’m a really chilly person so I get it, plus I live in north Italy. It’s not freezing cold here (I’ve been to New York this year, I feel you ahah) but it’s definitely cold for my taste.
For this reason, over the years I’ve found a lot of ways to keep warm in winter. I must say I’ve become pretty good at combining style with cool weather so let’s get into it.
This post is all about keeping warm in the winter season without sacrificing the aesthetic.
In this article:
- Layers are not the enemy
- Camisole
- Tights
- Materials & Quality
- Gloves, scarfs, and hats are accessories
- Long coats
- Fitting clothing
- The importance of shoes and socks
Layers are not the enemy
This is pretty basic but never underestimate the power of layers. The only problem with that is the “risk” of looking bulky. To prevent that you can concentrate on keeping the first layers pretty tight on the body then throw on a sweater or something that’s a little bit looser. This technique will reduce the bulkiness risk.
For example, you could pair
- Leather leggings
- Tight long sleeve T-shirt (tuck it under the leggings)
- Thick but loose white shirt
- Cozy loose sweater
- Leather boots
Camisole
Speaking of layers a camisole is perfect for that. I know it’s a summer garment but hear me out: keeping your core tight is super important in order for you to feel warm. The same thing goes for your feet.
For some strange reason if your core and feet are cold your body will struggle to keep in the warmth.
Tights
Use tights even when you wouldn’t think of using them. The thing I absolutely love doing is using a pair of thick hold-ups underneath jeans, trousers, long dresses, etc. I say this because I don’t find it classy to pair a thick pair of tights with a mini skirt.
Aurora’s Tips
instead of thick tights and mini skirts use regular tights with over the knee boots. you can also put on knee socks under them, nobody will see them and you’ll be happy and warm.
Materials & Quality
As you may already know preferring higher quality materials will make a big difference. I suggest you invest in materials such as wool, cashmere, down, merino, and tweed while avoiding cotton and linen for example.
You could also use silk for your blouses and shirt. Not only it will keep you warm but is going to elevate your outfit and make you look more expensive.
Also, play with textures in your outfits. Pair wool with leather, and use a tweed coordinated set. You can have a lot of fun with textures, I know I do.
I know purchasing these types of materials can be really expensive but here are a few reasons why I think it’s worth it.
- I promise you the cost per wear is going to make it worth your while.
- You don’t have to buy designers, there are a lot of brands that care about material quality while keeping their prices on the cheaper end. For example, try Lily Silk for your silk blouses.
- You don’t have to buy everything right away. You could invest in a few quality pieces every year, plus since they are high quality they will last you years so you don’t have to keep repurchasing them.
Remember, prefer quality over quantity especially to keep warm in winter.
Gloves, scarfs, and hats are accessories
This is a no-brainer but these garments are going to help keep you warm. The problem is a lot of us don’t actually use them or at least we don’t take advantage of them as accessories.
Imagine a plain and simple total black outfit with the right hat and fur gloves, it’s like putting on earrings and a necklace they can make or break an otherwise simple outfit.
It doesn’t get better than this, a way of making your outfits more expensive and put together with items designed to keep you warm.
Long coats
When you think of keeping yourself warm of course you are going to think about coats. My suggestion is to prefer long ones because not only they are going to make sure even your legs are well covered but also they are extremely chic. Keep in mind that when you are out in the winter season pretty much your entire outfit is made by your coat so, of course, you want it to be stunning.
Fitting clothing
As I anticipated before if you focus on choosing tight garments for your base layers your body will be able to keep warmth in a lot better than if you don’t. This step is really going to make a difference. Just try it you will see.
The importance of shoes and socks
Your choice in shoes is also going to make a lot of difference.
Prefer shoes that cover your ankles such as boots. Depending on your outfit and occasion you can pair different boots such as ankle boots. Of course, over-knee boots are a great option for winter plus they are so chic.
Aurora’s tips
if you add knee socks under your over the knee boots not only you will keep your legs warm but also your boots are going to stay up all day.
Also, your shoe material matters too. For winter, as many of us do, I go for suede and leather.
As I said in my tip above choose more chunky socks if you can. Sometimes I even buy my winter shoes half a size up so that I can fit my winter socks in them ahaha.
This post was all about how to keep warm in winter while remaining chic and classy.
