Are you an inverted triangle body shape?
Women with an inverted triangle shape have broader shoulders than hips. Measure your shoulders than your hips: if the first measure is greater than the second you are an inverted triangle.
For the inverted triangle also the chest and back tend to be broader than the rest of the body while the hips and bottom are more narrow.
In addition, the waist has little to no definition. If you look at yourself in the mirror you will notice your waist is not that little compared to your hips.
Also, this body type normally comes with gorgeous shapely legs.
Basically, inverted triangle women have an overall athletic-looking silhouette. A great example of an inverted triangle is the lovely Angelina Jolie.
What can you do to enhance your body type
1. Balance your shoulders
Our brains love symmetry and balance. So, in order to balance this body shape, we want to use fitting clothing on the top while keeping the bottom more on the loose end. This will create the illusion of more narrow shoulders and more voluminous hips.
A great example of this is the A-line dress. These types of dresses are more fitted on the top but puffier on the bottom, perfect for creating the illusion of broader hips. Another way of balancing your shoulders is with colors. By opting for dark-colored tops and light-colored bottoms you will create a more harmonious look.
Aurora’s tips
sometimes drawing attention to your shoulders rather than covering them up is great. for example wearing an off-shoulder top will not balance your outfit but can make you look more tough (broad shoulders are typically a masculine trait).
2. Define your waist
As we said, inverted triangle women have little to no waist definition. This is why we want to create the illusion of a snatched waist with clothing. You can achieve this by using belts on your waist as they will draw attention to them while tightening your waist. Another way to define your waist is by preferring more high-waisted styles: high-waist trousers, jeans, and skirts.
3. Add volume to your hips
By adding volume to your hips you will make them look bigger, balancing your features. These are basically more tips using the same strategy as before.
In order to achieve balance you can wear flared, wide and bootcut trousers, as they indeed create more volume to the lowest part of your body. You will get the same effect with flowy skirts. They can be more on the long side or mini skirts it doesn’t matter. Speaking of skirts for this purpose a-line skirts are perfect.
4. Draw attention to your beautiful legs
Since an inverted triangle body shape usually comes with beautiful legs you want to bring attention to them. For example skirts and shorts are a great way to show them off. Plus also high boots such as over-knee boots will do the job. You could even draw attention to them with high-waisted trousers since they will make your legs look even longer.
What you should avoid
1. Clothes that add volume to your shoulders
This tip refers to the same logic as before: we want to balance the shoulders by making them look more narrow. Wearing voluminous tops is going to get you the opposite effect. For example, you should avoid puff sleeves as by definition they will make your shoulders puffier.
2. Tight trousers
I know, we all love skinny jeans but with the inverted triangle body type, they are not ideal. As we already said a lot of times: you want to add volume to your hips. Unfortunately, tight trousers and jeans do just the opposite. This doesn’t mean you have to throw all of your skinny jeans out, if you really like them you can still pull them off from time to time. Maybe avoid wearing them with a voluminous top.
3. Heavy detailing around neck and shoulders
As we said many times (bare with me ahah) we want to balance out the broad shoulders and heavy detailing around them will just do the opposite. Opt for more detailing around your waist, hips, and legs. This will allow you to define your waist, make your hips look more voluminous, or show off your beautiful legs.
4. Straight necklines
With necklines as a general rule avoid wide off-shoulder and straight squared cuts. Instead here’s a list of the most flattering necklines for the inverted triangle woman:
- Asymmetric
- V-neck
- Scoop neck
- U-neck
- Alter neck
