Want to know how to take care of your hair at home? Here are the best at-home hair care tips.
Taking care of our hair can be really expensive. As much as we all would love to spend millions on beauty and hair products most of us are on a budget. But don’t worry you don’t necessarily need a lot of products to transform your hair and get it healthy.
Sometimes by simply taking more time with our hair care routine and paying more attention to the little things we do at home we can get healthier hair.
This post is all about at-home hair care tips you can implement in your hair care routine to get your hair healthy.
In this article:
At-home hair care tips – The dos
1. Do wash your hair regularly
Having a regular hair-washing routine is one of the simplest things you can do to take care of your hair. This way your hair will get used to the routine and it will regularly get everything it needs.
Also, contrary to popular belief, there’s no set frequency you need to be washing your hair as it depends on your hair and skin type.
For instance, if you have a really oily scalp you may need to wash your hair every other day while others can get away with a once-a-week wash.
2. Do comb gently
By combing your hair properly you will minimize breakage while avoiding hurting your scalp at the same time. Try combing your hair from the ends up. Also, prefer a wide tooth brush especially when your hair is wet. Wet hair is a lot weaker and will break more easily.
3. Do use soft hair towels
By squeezing and wrapping your hair with a regular towel you may be contributing to breakage and frizz. Instead, prefer a micro-fiber towel since it is more gentle and will cause less friction. You could also use an old cotton T-shirt, you will get the same result.
4. Do protect your hair from heat and sun
At this point, most of us know that using a good heat protectant before styling our hair is a must as it will minimize hair breakage and damage overall.
But, especially in the warmer months, we need to protect our hair from UV rays too. As we do for our skin with SPF invest in a good heat protectant.
5. Do use a clarifying shampoo
As we lather hair products and oils we are causing what is called “build-up”. Essentially it’s leftover products that remain on our hair which can lead to dull and heavy hair.
To avoid that purchase a clarifying shampoo (you can also find them as detox shampoo, they are the same thing). Use it once a month or more if needed. Just make sure to not overdo it as it can be too harsh on your scalp.
6. Do condition properly
Conditioning our hair after every wash is key to managing it properly. The conditioner will replenish your hair and provide it with the moisture it needs. You may want to take extra steps if you have high porosity hair, as it doesn’t retain moisture as well as other hair types.
7. Do massage your scalp
Massaging your scalp improves blood circulation to your scalp. This is key to proper oil production which will provide your hair the moisture it needs to grow strong and healthy.
Try massaging your hair with your hands or a scalp massager for 5 minutes every day.
At-home hair care tips – The don’ts
1. Don’t dry your hair naturally
Contrary to what many will tell you drying your hair naturally it’s not healthy. The more time our hair spends wet the more it’s prone to breakage.
Instead, use a heat protectant and try to avoid unnecessary heat. For example, set your hair drier to a lower temperature than you are used to.
2. Don’t rub your hair with a towel
Even if you use a micro-fiber towel don’t rub your hair with it. As you read a lot of time in this post, wet hair is really weak, and rubbing it will cause more breakage and frizz.
3. Don’t spray perfume on your hair
Perfume contains chemicals (and sometimes alcohol) that can dry your hair out. If you still want your hair to smell good try using the same scent for shampoo and conditioner.
By doing this you will accentuate the fragrance. Plus there are a lot of great hair perfumes out there for you to try.
4. Don’t twirl your hair
Twirling your hair will lead to more split ends so try to avoid it. If you need to do something with your hands you can try a fidget ring, this will keep your hands occupied.
