Want to know some healthy habits to have long healthy hair? You’re in luck, here you will find everything you need!
Everybody thinks you need fancy products and treatments to have healthy, soft, long hair. While they do really help, I’ve found that introducing a few daily habits to build a daily hair care routine was the game changer for me.
I used to struggle with split and dead ends, frizz, and a lot of hair breakage. With just a few daily habits, I reduced split ends, have softer and silky hair, and, of course, help with hair growth.

Daily hair care routine for long healthy hair
Don’t expect a 10-step hair care routine. I’m a pretty busy person, so I want to make sure I have a few healthy habits that actually work and take me not more than ten minutes to do.
Don’t underestimate the power of consistency. Just doing one thing that is good for your hair every day is better than a 12-step hair care routine once in a while.
Of course, I have other weekly and monthly habits, and also a specific wash day routine but today we’re talking DAILY hair habits.
Let’s get to the habits now. This is the quick hair care routine I do before going to sleep after my skincare routine.
1. Scalp serum
I approach hair care the same way I do skin care. If you think about it our scalp is made of skin, exactly like the skin of our face.
Research shows that a healthy scalp is crucial to hair growth and healthy hair in general, hence why the scalp serum.
Personally, my goal is hair growth so I use 3-4 drops of The Ordinary serum for hair density. I’ve been using it for the past few weeks and I’m loving it.
As of right now, I don’t think I grew new hair but I noticed a lot of growth in the baby hairs around my temples which surprised me since they haven’t grown in forever.
Also, I used to shave my sideburns (DON’T EVER DO IT) and it got to a point where it kind of looked like a man’s beard, not fun! So I intentionally used this product in this area to make the hair grow faster and I think it definitely worked.
Honestly, I recommend this product even if you’re not focusing on hair growth right now. Not only it contains great ingredients for hair growth such as caffeine and peptides, but also glycerin – which is my favorite humectant – and lactic acid.
Glycerin will definitely help hydrate your scalp while lactic acid is a chemical exfoliator to eliminate dead skin cells. You need to think about your scalp as you do the skin on your face. This is why I love this product!
Of course, you could also use other hair serums or even hair oils for this step. Just make sure they are not too oily. This serum doesn’t make my hair greasy at all, you only need a few drops.
If you wash your hair every other day you probably won’t care but I only wash my hair once or twice a week, if I want to stay consistent with this habit I need a non-greasy serum.
If you don’t really care for that I recommend the Mielle rosemary hair oil. It’s super popular on Tik Tok and for very good reasons! I use it as a pre-wash treatment but if you manage to use it every day I’m sure you’ll get faster results.
2. Scalp massage for a few minutes
This step is to help hair growth. Studies show that massaging your scalp for a few minutes every day can tremendously help hair growth.
All I do is while I apply my serum every night I also take a few minutes to really massage my scalp. I’ve been focusing more on the hair around my temple and my sideburns. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I notice a lot of hair growth in those areas.
To be honest, it is a little boring. This is why I got a hair massager. You can find them for very cheap, if you’re curious this is the scalp massager I use.
3. Hair oil on the ends of your hair
This step is what really made a difference in the softness of my hair. Also, I’ve noticed I rarely have split ends anymore and my hair is a lot less frizzy.
This is really a must. Basically, you want to apply a little bit of oil to your mid-lengths and ends. Of course, avoid your scalp.
Also, if you have a really oily scalp I suggest you don’t even go near your scalp since your hair doesn’t need it. Instead, if you have a dry scalp like me, just avoid your roots.
You really don’t need much product, for reference, this is how much I use. It’s just one pump.
Personally, I’m experiencing a lot of hair breakage which means my hair is very damaged. For this reason, I’ve been using the L’Oreal Professional absolut repair hair oil.
If you’re also struggling with hair breakage I suggest you check out this article on how to stop hair breakage once and for all!
I only tried it because my go-to shampoo and hair mask are from this line. If you have damaged hair you absolutely need to try them by the way!
I know it’s not super cheap but you saw how little I use every day. It really goes a long way. For reference, I opened a new bottle a month ago, and look at how much I still have left! At this rate, this will probably last me another 3-4 months.
Anyway, my point is I’m a basic bitch and I love my products to match 😂, hence why I tried this hair oil. Honestly, though, it really does its job. My hair is way less frizzy, it’s very soft and I don’t have split ends anymore. It’s magic!
Of course, all of this is not from the oil alone, I’ve really learned how to take care of my hair and what products to use. If you ask me though, this is one of my top choices.
I have other suggestions I really think you should pay attention to.
This is one of the most talked about oil. Of course, it’s Olaplex and their bondage repair products are probably unmatched.
Honestly, if you have money to spend absolutely buy this. If you’re on a budget like me though repurchasing this is going to cost you.
Don’t get fooled, the price is almost the same as the L’Oreal one but Olaplex No. 7 is 30 ml while the L’Oreal oil is 90 ml, it’s quite the difference.
Argan oil is probably one of the cheapest ways you can go. I’ve used it for a very long time (this in the photo is the one I used) and it has a lot of benefits.
I have to be honest though when I tried Olaplex No. 7 and L’Oreal absolut repair my hair really did look better.
So, if you are on a tight budget get this, it’s better than not oiling your hair at all but, if you can, get one of the other two.
4. Sleep in a protective hairstyle
Finally, the last step. Sleeping in a protective hairstyle means braiding your hair or making sure it is in a LOOSE HAIRSTYLE.
This will reduce the friction between your pillow and your hair which causes a lot of hair breakage. I also noticed my hair is frizzier when I wake up and I didn’t braid them.
Honestly, I hate that it ruins my blowout. It really bothers me which is why I’m testing a lot of heatless curling methods so that I can both protect my hair and wake up with my hairstyle still intact.
I will keep you posted on this. If you have super straight hair definitely braid them! It won’t make much of a difference for you and you’ll have healthier hair for it.
Bonus tip, if you can stand sleeping in a bonnet absolutely do! This will really help your hair out and minimize the frizz.
5 healthy hair habits to take care of your hair at home
To wrap it up I want to share a few healthy hair habits you can also implement daily to achieve healthy and long hair. Personally, these are what I’ve found to really make a difference.
- Use a wide tooth comb to minimize breakage.
- Make sure you eat foods rich in omega-3 and omega-6 like salmon and walnuts.
- Always use a heat protectant.
- Find a hair care routine that works and stick to it.
- Avoid wearing tight hairstyles repeatedly during the week.
