This post is all about hair growth tips every woman must know.
Growing big, shiny, healthy hair is no easy task, we all know it. So, before we start I think it’s important to know how much our hair can grow in a month, this way you can roughly know what to expect.
On average, hair grows roughly half an inch each month, adding up to about six inches per year. Of course, these numbers can be affected by a wide number of factors such as genetics and age.
Essentially, genetics play a big role in how our hair grows but don’t give up just yet. As I said there are several factors at play. While we cannot take action on genetics we definitely can act on other factors.
1. Pay attention to scalp health
As we all know our hair grows from our scalp. Naturally then, if our scalp is healthy our hair will grow healthier.
So how do we take care of it? The first thing you must do consistently is massage your scalp regularly. This is important because our hair needs good blood flow to the scalp in order to grow stronger, scalp massages help with exactly that. I know you want to know it: yes this is scientifically proven.
In a 2016 study, a small group of men was given daily scalp massages (we’re talking a 4 minutes massage so it won’t take that much time from your day). At the end of the study, they found an increase in hair thickness.
We can also reference a more recent study. They also found that in a group of roughly 300 people (which of course followed a specific scalp massaging regimen) 70% of them experienced an increase in hair thickness.
Aurora’s tips
massage your scalp with scalp massagers to get the best results. Here’s a cheap and a pricier option.
If you are obsessed with hair care like me you may have heard of hair oiling by now. To put it simply you apply oil to your hair and let it sit on your scalp 2 to 3 hours before your regular showers.
I found this hack also made my hair glossier and smoother. Now, what oils do we use? You can go the more basic route and use a single oil. The best known is castor oil.
If you want the best castor oil at the most convenient price I suggest this one. I tried it and it was really good but, honestly, I feel like this kind of packaging is very inconvenient. I prefer this particular castor oil with a pipe, it’s way easier to apply and I don’t make a mess on the way.
There are also a lot of products out there for this exact purpose. Here are some of my absolute favorites:
The one I found most effective is the JVN one but right now I’m using The Ordinary one because it’s way cheaper and your girl is on a budget. It still gives me great results though, especially for balding spots.
2. An adequate diet is key for your hair to grow healthy
Our hair is part of our body. Naturally, like every other organ, it is affected by what we eat. I know this may not be what you were looking for but I promise you it makes all the difference in the world.
Plus, you will also find improvements in your skin, nails, and overall health.
So, here is the uncomfortable truth about hair growth: there is no product or technique that will actually make a difference in your hair overnight, especially if you don’t take care of your body first.
Anyway, there are a lot of foods you can implement in your diet that will have different benefits for your hair.
If you’re interested I have a few articles about nutrition for healthy hair. In particular, I concentrated on vitamins for hair growth from a scientific point of view and vitamin deficiencies that can cause hair loss.
What to eat to enhance hair growth
Fish like salmon and sardines are packed with healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Your body can’t make these healthy fats, so you have to get them from food or supplements. Your body needs them to grow hair and keep it shiny and full.
Our hair is made up of 95% keratin which is a protein. Greek yogurt is packed with proteins and also contains vitamin B5 (known as pantothenic acid) an ingredient that helps blood flow to your scalp and hair growth.
Assuming too little iron can lead to hair loss, this is why we must consume foods that contain this nutrient such as fortified cereal, grains, pasta, soybeans, beef, leafy greens, and lentils.
This is why other than implementing these hair growth tips is also important to get checked for deficiency of any kind. This means getting your blood work done at least once per year.
If you want to know more about what to eat to promote hair growth I have an entire article where I go in-depth about the best foods and why they are important.
3. Use shampoos that help with hair growth
According to trichologist Kate Holden, AIT shampoos can help with hair growth by cleaning the scalp correctly, strengthening the hair shaft, and reducing breakage.
In addition, you can wash your hair with a detoxifying shampoo once a month to reduce protein buildup. I found this will allow you to keep your hair light and flowy.

My favorite shampoo for hair growth is the kérastase densifique bain densité shampoo.
4. Introduce hair growth supplements in your routine only if needed
If you eat healthily you may not be needing this one. But I know maintaining a healthy diet it’s a struggle for most of us so you can always turn to supplements (which do not replace a healthy diet tough).
I strongly believe in supplements even if I think they are not fundamental, but I will not lie to you, for what concerns hair growth I tried many with barely any results.
Right now though I found a new product that helped my friend tremendously (note she had lost all her hair due to chemo and trauma) so I jumped on the supplements wagon once again and I will keep you posted.
5. Avoid stress as much as you can
Can stress cause hair loss? “Yes, stress and hair loss can be related”, answers Daniel K. Hall-Flavin, M.D. from Mayo Clinic. He also adds “If you notice sudden or patchy hair loss or more than usual hair loss when combing or washing your hair, talk to your doctor.
Sudden hair loss can signal an underlying medical condition that requires treatment. If needed, your doctor might also suggest treatment options for your hair loss.” (You can read his complete answer here).
